Belated new year greetings to all from all in St. Pats GAA. It has been a quite time on the GAA front, but you will be glad to hear that things are starting to pick up. Our U21 footballers are back in training for the last 2 weeks and they actually commence their championship next Sunday at 12:00 in Newcastle against Fr. Sheehys. It is very early to be playing championship, but we don’t come up with the fixture list!!!

Hopefully our lads will kick the year off with a win. The U21 is played on a round robin this year which will ensure more games, even if in bad conditions.

The best of luck to all St. PAtricks teams, juvenile, ladies and mens for 2012, here’s hoping for a fruitful year.

St. Patricks 0-10 Rockwell Rovers 2-10

The county Junior A hurling semi final as played yesterday in Clonmel, in glorious sunshine actually! Conditions were perfect for hurling especially for this time of year.

The game started with Rockwell picking up an early point and looking threatening around the Pats goal mouth. The South sides backs were struggling to clear their lines efficiently and this lead to the Rockwell midfield and half backs picking up lot of uncontested ball, from half hit clearences. A Rockwell goal came soon after, with Rockwell well on top after 10 mins. Then Tony O’Brien picked off a good point to get Pats off the mark. Rockwell responded with another point, and this was to be the pattern all day, when Pats tried to get close Rockwell done the necessary and tagged on another score. Rockwell got their second green flag after a number of mistakes in the Pats defense. Things were going from bad to worse at this stage, Pats after 20 mins had left themselves a significant hill to climb to get back into contention. Both teams traded scores over the next period. In the last 10 mins of the half the Drangan/Cloneen side got on top and it was possibly this period they will rue most!! Possibly 3 to 4 very, very good goal chances went a begging. The Rockwell inside backs looked frail and unfortunately our forwards didn’t captalise when the chances arose. The score finished 2-05 to 0-06 at half time.

The second half was mostly even, as far as scores were concerned, but not on the wides front, Pats won that one unfortunately! Not goal chances but point taking opportunities, from play and from placed balls, our lads failed to convert their chances. Rockwell on the other hand were very economical, when they came up the field, and when opportunities arose they took the majority of them. Pats battled throughout but as mentioned earlier, whenever they got a score of two, Rockwell came back with a point and also unfortunately the goal that we craved never came. In that sense the Rockwell rear guard held up well after a good deal of pressure throughout the second half.

So the year finishes up, unfortunately without silverware. All the players must be thanked for the effort they gave over the year and the enjoyment they provided to all their supporters. Also a big thanks to the management for their time and effort throughout the year.

Team: J.Moroney, R.Needham, C.Dunne, D.Meagher, P.Horan, L.Brett, E.McCormack(Capt), C.Barry, S.Goery, T.O’Brien, A.Cronin, N.Gleeson, N.Kearney, R.McCormack, D.Molloy; Subs; J.Hayes for D.Molloy(HT), D.Barry for N.Kearney (45).

St. Patricks 0-13 Loughmore/Castleainey 0-12

The County Junior A hurling quarter final was played on Saturday in Littleon in blustery conditions. It was a very enjoyable game for spectators as the lead ebbed and flowed between both teams throughout the hour, there was very little between both sides.

Loughmore played with the wind in the first half, which was considerable enough, possibly even with 4 points. The mid side started well and converted any frees which they got and lead 0-03 to 0-01 after 10 minutes. Pats came back into it, with Robbie McCormack hitting some very good free into the wind. The Pats half back line was standing firm under the long puck outs throughout the first half, this was a major factor. Pats had a few scares around the goal mouth before half time, but managed to keep a clean sheet and went in one point down at the interval, which they would have been very happy with.

The Drangan and Clonnen lads upped the pace at the start of the second. Neil Gleeson leveled the game after a few minutes with a very good score from the left wing. They then tagged on another score from Robbie McCormack to push them ahead. Our lads then went two up, the game was very competitive at this stage with both side totally committed. Loughmore dug in and brought it back to level with 10 minutes left. Then we got two goal chances, one of which was blazed wide, unfortunately. The game was nearing and end and L.Brett had a free from the half back line; he delivered it and Aron Cronin made a great catch and turned to slot it over. Loughmore fought back strongly but our lads matched it and held out for a deserved win. Best for Pats on the day was P.Horan, both midfielders C.Barry and S.Gorey who between them got 3 points from play and A.Cronin who hurled a lot of ball and got the insurance score. A good day for our club that progresses us to the next day which will be the county semi final against Rockwell Rovers in Clonmel next Sunday, at 12:00.

Team: J.Moroney, R.Needham, C.Dunne, D.Meagher, P.Horan, L.Brett(Capt), E.McCormack, S.Gorey, C.Barry, T.O’Brien, A.Cronin, N.Gleeson, D.Barry, R.McCormack, N.Kearney; Subs D. Molloy for D.Barry, R.Maher, M.Slattery, J.Hayes, P.Moroney, E.Needham

St. Pats won their South u21 hurling quarter final last weekend against Cahir in Monroe. Unfortunately for all concerned Cahir started the game with only 13 players, produced the mandatory 15 for start of second half but then returned to 14. Conditions were poor but the number mismatch ensured the game was never in the balance. It finished 3-17 to 0-7 to Pats. We now play the winners of Skeehen and Kilsheelin in the semi final.

Team: J.Moroney(Capt), W.O’Brien, C.Dunne, T.Hayes, E.Needham, P.Horan, E.McCormack, D.Barry, S.Gorey, N.Kearney, N.Gleeson, T.O’Brien, S.Broderick, R.Maher, K.O’Neill. Subs; G.Strappe, D.Riordan, M.O’Halloran, M.Slattery, M.Fitzgerald, J.Moloney.

St. Pats Junior A hurlers play today against Loughmore in the county quarter final in Littleton. They have only one injury concern with captain Eoin McCormack going over on his ankle in the U21 game last weekend. Apart from that all are looking forward to it. Loughmore beat a fancied Sarsfields in the mid final, so it will be a big task for our lads. Here’s hoping that the lads get the wright result today and progress to the semis.

Monroe will host this years Junior A Hurling final on Sunday evening at 5:15pm. It is a repeat of last years semi final, St. Pats Vs Kilsheelin.

The score board, the objection, the appeal and the replay will all be remembered from the meeting of these two in last years semi final. So to say that there is a bit at stake this year is an understatement. St. Pats will be intent on holding onto their crown and Kilsheelin intent on reversing last years result.

Kilsheelin put a big score(3-20) against a fancied Clonmel Og in the semi final. St. Pats stumbled over Newcastle in their semi. Will Pats be able to move the ball fast enough and avoid a physical battle with a very big Kilsheelin team, only time will tell.

St. Pats have some, minor injury worries but nothing major. Tony O’Brien misses the final due to suspension and he will be a loss. Apart from that it looks as if our lads are ready to go and here’s wishing them the best on Sunday evening!

In recent weeks all the attention and spotlight has been on the Tipp’s Senior hurlers – however the Tipp Minor footballers have been nice and quietly preparing for their big day when they lock horns with Dublin in the All Ireland Final on the 18th September.

It’s strange how history can often repeat itself – in 1984 Tipp and Dublin clashed in the All Ireland Final , with Dublin winning by 1-9 to 0-4. It has taken both teams until this year to return to an All Ireland Final. That Dublin Team contained a certain Jim Stynes who later made the switch to Aussie Rules (successfully I might add) and won the Brownlow Medal in the late 80′s.

The Tipp team of 1984 was coached by Seamus McCarthy (Galtee Rovers) and was a serious outfit – any team that contained players like Brian Burke , Ger Ryan , John Owens , Tommy Sheehan , Jim O’ Meara , Sean Brett , John Hackett and our own Tom Anglim amongst others was a team to be reckoned with.

The 1984 team beat Limerick , Cork and Kerry in Munster , New York in the Q/ F, Roscommon in the All Ireland semi-final before losing to Dublin in the final. Looking back on that bunch of players (many who played Senior for Tipperary) they were quite unlucky not to win at least one Munster U-21 football title. Enough about the past , what of the 2011team? Well they’re certainly taken the hard route to Croke Park , beating Limerick , trailed Kerry by 11 points in Semple Stadium and came back to win it, won the Munster Final in Killarney against a strong Cork team. In the All Ireland Quarter Final they beat Meath before overcoming the Rossies in the semi-final to set up a date with a Dessie Farrell managed Dublin team.
To the outsider , having a Tipperary Minor team contest a football decider may come as a surprise – however serious work is being done at underage level in Tipperary in recent years. At U14 , U15 , U16 , U17 , Minor and U21 levels Tipperary is no longer just a stepping stone for the Cork’s and Kerry’s of this world – in fact Tipperary underage football teams are starting to compete on the equal footing with Cork and Kerry going by recent results!
This 2011 team brings many strengths and positives to the party – a good goalkeeper , a tight defence , a big and mobile centre-feild and a set of forwards that work incredibly hard for each other – their style of play is well rehearsed , methodical build-up from the back with much hand-passing until it reaches mid-field and then a quick ball to the target man Michael Quinlivan or Liam McGrath, The team possessed great spirit (witness their come back against Kerry) size – four or five men over 6′ 2” , skill and confidence.
Can they do it Against Dublin? Well , from along way out Dublin have been the team to beat. Dublin also is a big physical team – strong and fast in the backs , a very big centre-field pairing , but not too mobile (could there be an advantage here for Tipperary?) and 6 forwards that will take watching , in particular Ciaran Kilkenny( their dual-star). Despite their imposing physique and their impressive run to the final , Dublin was very lucky to overcome a plucky Galway team that very nearly turned them over.
I’m sure the Tipperary Management team have looked at the video of the Dublin\Galway match once or twice in recent weeks to fine tune Tipperary’s tactics for the final.
Clonmel Commercials, Moyle Rovers and Loughmore/Castleiney dominate the starting 15- no representatives from St- Pats this time around – but give it a couple of years and I’m sure we’ll be following the exploits of Conor Clancy and Cathal Mahoney on the Tipp Minor Teams.
In conclusion, best of luck to David Power, his selectors, trainer plus John Evans, and most of all to Captain Liam McGrath and his team mates- Up Tipp!
