St. Pats get right result this time!
St. Patricks 3-18 Kilsheelin 1-18 AET
Yes the South JHC Semi final was eventually replayed, an d St. Pats finally got the result they were looking for, be it after extra time. They are now into the final where they will meet Ballylooby-Castlegrace next weekend.
Conditions were quite good for yesterdays game in Monroe. In general it was a decent game and every ball was competed for. It was probably the goals which decided the outcome in the end with St. Pats getting theirs at key points within the game. They say that goals win matches and this point rang true again yesterday.
The first half was well contested by both teams. Brian McCormack got a green flag for Pats after a goal mouth scramble midway through the first half but Kilsheelin came back through John Roche’s free taking. Pats had a number of other goal chances but didn’t take them. At this stage Liam Brett was hurling well at center back and Shane Gorey was delivering some decent ball to the inside line.
The lead tooed and frooed during the second half and space was at a minimum, you could sense that this was championship and both teams put big effort in. John Roche and Tony O’Brien traded frees throughout. Both sides also missed some very scoreable chances. It eventually finished all square.
It often happens that a goal in extra time is the key turning point and this came to the fore yesterday. Brian McCormack got inside the full back early in the first half of extra time and got his second green flag to give Pats the tonic they needed. They added on a point from Tony O’Brien which put them four up. Liam Brett was really playing a captains parts at this stage and clearing very well from his half back line. Again John Rooche get Kilsheelin within striking distance with his immaculate free taking(he finished with something like 12 in total).
Early into the second half of extra time, Robbie McCormack went for a point and fortunately for the Drangan and Cloneen lads it sailed straight into the top of the net. This more or less sealed it for Pats and they ran out six point winners.
All in all it was avery competitive game and it should be a real confidence boost for our lads. They of course will need to sharpen up and possibly attempt to convert more of their possession but yesterday’s kind of win should bring them on. Here’s looking forward to the final next weekend.
