Junior Hurlers Lose Semi Final

Posted in Hurling on August 26, 2013 by Imreoir

St. Patricks 3-06 Skeheen 1-16

Unfortunately for a second year running Skeheen brought an end to our Junior hurlers championship at the semi final stage in Clonmel sportsfield yesterday. The score tells the story unfortunately, 17 scores to 9.

It was a lovely day weather wise in Clonmel and the pitch was in great condition, everything was set for a good game of hurling. The game started evenly enough with both teams trading points. Skeheen goaled midway though the half, a well taken effort by their corner forward. Skeheen then kicked on and opened up a 7 point lead (1-7 to 0-3). Neil Gleeson at number 6 for Pats was central to everything Pats done well, he was keeping the defensive unit in tact. Thankfully not long before half time, Pats got a 21 yard free and Tony O’Brien goaled. This was an important score before the break to keep Pats within touching distance.

After the break the teams traded scores again, but the Drangan/Cloneen lads need a goal and it duely came 10mins in. Robbie Maher, a half time substitute, followed in a ball dropping into the square and kicked the sliothar into the goal. The crowd hoped that this would resurrect the challenge but it never really materialised. Skeheen steadied the ship through immaculate free taking by their corner forward. Brian McCormack, also a half time substitute was starting to make an impact at full forward, picking up two good scores from play. Eventually with less than 10 minutes left Pats got another 21 yard free and Tony O’Brien again converted(Goal). This put 2 between them. Unfortunatley N.Gleeson picked up a second yellow and Pats played the last 5 mins with 14 but, again Skeheen steadied and eventually ran out deserving winners by 4.

A disappointing result for Pats. Neil Gleeson was the standout performer for our lads, head and shoulders above anybody else. Others played ok but nobody else put a real stamp on the game.

Junior Hurling Semi Final
On this Sunday 25th August our Junior Hurlers play Skeheenarinka in the South Tipp Semi Final in Clonmel Sportsfield at 2.00pm. They played Thurles sarsfields in a challenge game last week to prepare for the semi-final. We wish Colm Dunne a speedy recovery who sustained a head injury in that game. We hope to see plenty of supporters in Clonmel on Sunday.

Minor Hurling
Our minor hurlers Anner Gaels played Cahir in the minor championship on Monday evening last. After a strong start from Anner Gaels, Cahir fought back and won the game by 2 points. This is a game that our lads would feel they should have won. They must now win all remaining games to have any chance of reaching the play-off stages. On next Wednesday evening 28th August they play Killenaule at 6.30 in Mullinahone

Juvenile Gaa

Congratulations to Conor Clancy, Aidan Buckley and Cathal Mahoney who have all been selected for the Tipperary county Under 16 A hurling panel. This is the first time that our club has had three players together on a county A hurling panel. We wish the lads the best of luck in the forthcoming tournament.

Ladies Football
Our ladies junior team play Cahir B in the south semi-final this Wednesday evening in Cloneen at 6.30 pm. Our gaelic 4mothers team will take part in a blitz in Kilkenny this Saturday.

Anner Park
In the coming week (weather permitting) work will commence to improve the playing surface of the pitch in Cloneen. This will involve the pitch been spiked and a 100 ton of sand been spread on the field to improve drainage. Grass seed will also be stitched in to the surface to improve the sod. This work would not be possible only for funds raised by our lotto. We encourage you to please support our lotto. You can play our lotto from anywhere in the world by clicking on “play lotto” above.
