St. Patricks Juvenile GAA Kellogs Summer CÚl Camp

We ask all parents and juvenile players to note that at the moment our Annual Summer Camp will commence on Monday 29th June and continue until Friday 3rd July. However this may change due to the ongoing restrictions that are in place. Once we hear of further developments we will let you know.

Hurling and Football Games Postponed

Due to the Coronavirus all Adult and Juvenile Hurling and Football games have been postponed until the present crisis has abated. Training has also been put on hold and both Anner Park Cloneen and Drangan GAA Field are out of bounds for all.
Community Delivery Service

In an effort to help people who are self isolating in Drangan and Cloneen a group of GAA people have got together to arrange deliveries to houses in Drangan and Cloneen. If you wish to avail of this service please place your order by phonong the shop and delivery will be arranged on the following day. We thank the local shops and the volunteers who will be delivering to your doorstep but not entering your house in the coming days and weeks.

GAA – The Early Years

On Sunday February 26 1899 Killusty defeated Cloneen in a football match played in Cloneen and refereed by Mr. John Lawrence of Killusty. In a football tournament in Mullinahone Ballyluskey were defeated by Ballyneale. A big Athletic meeting was held in Drangan in October 1899 with competitors from near and far taking part in running, jumping, weight throwing and cycling competitions. Also in 1899 Jack Cormack from Cloneen played with the Tipperary Senior Footballers. In 1900 there were four teams from the parish in football competitions. On August 4 1901 a big sports day was held in Crohane. On Sunday August 25 1901 Ballingarry represented Tipperary in a football tournament in Cork with Johnny Tobin Newtown, Jack Phelan Crampscastle and Lar Clancy Ballylusky playing as guest players for Ballingarry. In 1902 Ballylusky led by John Guinan were defeated by Thurles and a second Ballylusky team played both New Birmingham and Kilsheelan but did not progress any further. On Wednesday July 1 James Gleeson and James Phelan represented Ballylusky at a Co. Board meeting in Clonmel. On Sunday May 5 1904 Ballylusky were fixed to play Poulacapple in a football tournament in Ballingarry. However results are not available. No teams from the parish entered the championships in 1905.

The Birth of the GAA When the GAA was founded in Hayes Hotel in Thurles on November 1 1884 a small number of men met in the Billiard Room but a large number of supporters gathered in the hotel and some say that there were so many other supporters in attendance that many had to go to another hostelry across the street. Among those was a Drangan man Mikey Tobin of Newtown whose son Johnny Tobin captained Cloneen to win the Co. Tipperary Senior Football Championship in 1908. Johnny also lined out with the Co. Tipperary Senior Footballers for a number of years. A Cloneen man’s son was also in Hayes Hotel in Thurles that day. He was Henry Meagher of Tullaroan whose son Lory was to become one of the most famous hurlers of all time. We compliment these men on their support for the most successful venture in modern day Ireland. Getting to Thurles was not an easy task in those days as it probably involved walking or going by horse to Thurles or maybe to get the train in Laffansbridge or Farranaleen. Historians in Tullaroan tell us that Henry Meagher went to Thurles by pony and trap which was probably a bit of luxury at that time.

GAA – The Early Years
One of the first GAA clubs in Co. Tipperary in 1885 was Cloneen who were defeated by Kilcash in a football tournament in Fethard in 1886 which was attended by many thousands according to the report in the Cashel Sentinel who reported that the supporters preserved the most orderly demeanour and sobriety. By 1887 3 more clubs from the parish had affiliated to the Central Executive of the GAA. They were Drangan Davitts, Ballyluskey O’Hanrahans and Crohane. On May 21 1887 Ballyluskey O’Hanrahans were defeated by The Cashel Rock Crackers who had a “hard Earned Victory” according to The Cashel Sentinel. A tournament was held in Drangan with several teams from Clonmel and Tipperary. In a tournament played in Fethard Lisronagh defeated Crohane, Drangan defeated Ballingarry and Poulmucka defeated defeated Ballyluskey. The next few years were dominated by athletic contests with a lot of GAA activity put on hold due to the Parnell Split. In 1892 the number of players on football and hurling teams was reduced from 21 to 17. In a football tournament in Mullinahone Callan and Mullinahone played a draw and Ballyneale defeated Ballyluskey. In a football tournament in Mullinahone there were teams from Grangemockler, Kilcash, Fethard, Drangan, Mullinahone, Callan, Windgap, Dessart and Coolagh. In February 1894 draws and fixtures were made for the Co. Tipperary football and hurling championships but no teams were entered from Drangan or Cloneen.
